I'm Sonja. Transformational Somatic Coach & Breathwork Facilitator — Wilmington, NC
How I got here…
I started out studying medicine in Germany. I loved the science, the complexity of the human body as a whole still fascinates me. But I knew early on that I didn't want to work inside a system that treats symptoms in isolation. I wanted to work with the whole person.
So I left medicine and trained as a Heilpraktiker, a naturopathic practitioner. That opened a door I've never stopped walking through. Bodywork, energy work, yoga, breathwork, Pakua Martial Arts, every practice deepened my understanding of how much the body holds, and how much it knows.
When I moved to the United States, I had to reimagine how I could do this work. I trained as a coach, through the Gaja Collective and Caroline Strawson's School of Healing and Growth, and discovered that somatic, trauma-informed coaching was the place where everything I'd learned, and everything I'd lived, came together.
This path has always been about growth, and showing up more and more as myself. That's still what drives me.
How I show up.
There was a time when my whole life was organized around becoming who I thought I was supposed to be. I kept measuring myself against an invisible standard — and kept falling short. I was in a constant struggle with myself, and I couldn't find the way out.
I did all the things. Read the books, went to therapy, trained in modality after modality. Movement was always a constant in my life — martial arts, yoga, breathwork, walking, cycling, hiking, watersports, the gym — you name it. A genuine source of joy and aliveness. But if I'm honest, it also served a pattern: staying busy, keeping moving, avoiding what was underneath. I understood my patterns intellectually. And still — something didn't quite land.
Looking back, none of that was wasted. All of it was building awareness — layer by layer, slowly bringing me closer to what was actually underneath. Until eventually I landed in somatic work. In nervous system work. In pattern recognition that went beyond the mind and into the body.
That's where things finally clicked. Not because I found the right answer, but because I found the right entry point. Working with the body directly — feeling what was actually there instead of just thinking about it. Understanding my nervous system and what it had been carrying. Getting curious about the patterns that kept showing up, instead of fighting them.
This work built something real in me — a deeper resilience, a stronger sense of agency, and the ability to show up more authentically in my own life. Not because everything became easier, but because I found a different relationship with myself.
That's what I bring to this work. My own path through the same territory — and a deep belief that the body is where lasting change actually lives.
